ASX-listed American Rare Earths (ARR) has begun test mining at its Cowboy State Mine (CSM) in Wyoming as part of a plan to supply feedstock for a demonstration plant.

Through its US subsidiary Wyoming Rare (USA), the company is extracting about 3 200 t of ore from the Halleck Creek deposit. The first of two planned blasts was safely executed, fracturing weathered material to a depth of 3.6 m.

The company plans to excavate and stockpile the blasted material over the coming week before exposing the underlying non-weathered ore, which will be blasted and crushed on-site to a top size of 5 cm.

The crushed ore would be used for metallurgical testing, building a stockpile for the demonstration plant, and producing samples for potential offtake partners, ARR said in a statement. Weathered material would be backfilled into the test pit once processing was complete.

ARR said the test mining programme would also provide data on drill penetration rates, blast fragmentation, and other mining-related metrics that would inform future mine design.

The company said the demonstration plant would help de-risk full-scale development by validating processing flowsheets, refining engineering and cost models, and producing end-product samples for potential partners.

“Commencement of test mining at CSM is a critical milestone in our development pathway,” ARR said in a statement.
